The Sedam family in North America can trace their roots back to at least 1640, to a man by the name of Hendrick Rycken (alt. spellings include Hendryck Rycke, Hendrick Reycke Sudam, and various others). Hendrick was born in 1640 in Zutphen, Gelderlands, Netherlands, and immigrated to New World in 1663, to what was at the time New Amsterdam, shortly after New York. I personally do not know very much about how Sedam came about, but my leading guess is that it has something to do with the town of Schiedam, Netherlands. I believe I dug up a record at one time the his father was Hendrick Von Schiedam.
