(English) This is a widespread Lancashire surname, but no place-name Seddon can be traced; and in all probability the surname is an assimilated and mutated form (through the pron. User-submitted Reference
The Seddon surname is derived from a Celtic tribe Setantii, who were a sub-tribe of the Brigantes, who lived in Northern England. But it is possible that the surname derived from places that were named after the tribe, e.g. in Roman times there was a settlement Portus Setantiorum and the river Seteia (now known as The Mersey). The tradition states that the name of the tribe was Sedonda. The Unitarian theologian-clergyman John Seddon (1719–1769) of Bolton and Warrington often signed his papers as Sedonda. As did George Seddon (1727–1801), the highly successful cabinetmaker who set up business in Georgian London.
