Sedlak Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

The Sedlak surname comes from Old Bohemian Sedlák, Sedlaak, which remains Sedlák in Czech, Moravian, and Slovak. Originally both a social status and occupational surname, Sedlák referred to a 'farmer who owned his own land', a free man(Freeman, Franklin) or landed gentry, below the high nobility and above the landless peasantry. A sedlák owned more land than a sedlaček (little sedlák), a čalupnik (Chalupnik, 'cottager'), or a zahradník (gardener). Today in the Czech Republic and Slovakia the term sedlák can mean simply 'farmer', with rustic connotations. However, the original land-owning, free-man denotation of the surname is still remembered, making it similar to Svoboda, Swoboda and Dvořák (Dvorak).
