(English) The happy or prosperous person; the good, simple man.
This word, in the forms of sely and silly, occurs in O. English writers from Chaucer to Milton, in the sense of harmless or simple. The word silly, the etymology of which has been debated, is much perverted from its original meaning, and the word ' simple' is now undergoing a similar degradation. 2. Ferguson derives it from Anglo-Saxon sil, prosperous.
Seeley: may possibly hail from Sillé in Sarthe.
