User-submitted Reference
This surname come from Italy, more precisely from the areas around Venice. Its meaning it's related to the woodcutting/woodworking profession as the radix "Seg" suggests.
This is the derived form of an ancient European radix 'sak' from which the latin words 'secare'(cutting),'seca'(saw) derived. Later those words were transformed in "segare" and "sega" (plural "Seghe") in the Italian form.
This surname could be given even to some wood artisans, in fact the "saw" was mostly used as a symbol for the artisans during the Middle Ages.
