The name Segun-Dabo is a family name derived from the Dabo family. Chief Olusegun Dabo of the main Dabo branch in contravention of the family tradition insisted his children include his name Segun before the family name. Thus, the compound surname was born.

The original Dabo name is inherited from chief Olusegun's grandfather who was so named after he and his sister left the family abode of the Maga family in the 19th century. It meant 'goodbye'.
