User-submitted Reference
Originally, the surname was written as Seitl.
During the rule of Maria-Therese, three families with the surname Seitl have left the area of the current Frisia and settled in Hungary, where, among many families, they were given free lands.
Back in the day, every record of births, deaths and marriages were kept in churches. During these times, a mistake was made and the surname became 'Hungarianized' as Szeitl. The name of our family remained written as such up until the end of the Second World War.
After WWII ended, a deportation of German speaking people and people of Germanic origin began in Hungary (they were used as scapegoats). In desperation, many families changed their surnames to a Hungarian one or a more Hungarian sounding one to avoid deportation. The Szeitl family was luckily good friends with the registrar of the village/town and they have managed to put an extra 'i' at the end of the documents, as it fit the space. With this change, the family name became less Germanic, and hence the family avoided deportation. This also resulted in only a few people bearing the Szeitli name.
In 1956, when there was an uprising in Hungary against the USSR, many fled from Hungary, including a member of the Szeitli family, and he has settled in Australia.
Currently, most of the Szeitlis live in Hungary, while a few live in Australia.
This data has been passionatly collected over the years by János Szeitli, Hungary, my grandfather.
