A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

From the occupation of sieve maker (Old English sife-+ wryhta). William Sufifwricht witnessed an instrument of sasine in Brechin in 1512 (REB., II, p. 170), and in 1567 there is entry of a payment to Andrew Sifwricht, servitor to John Wischart of Pittarro (ER., XIX, p. 271). John Sivwright in the parish of Glass is recorded in 1716 SCM., IV, p. 168), and George Seivwrighi was a member of the Huntly Company of Volunteers in 1798 (Will, p. 19). Seifvright 1643, Siffwright 1696. There was forerly a craft of sievewrights in Edinburgh, referred to by Maitland in his History of Edinburgh, 1753, p. 317.
