The Selitsanos surname originates from the village Selitsa next to Kalamata in South Greece. It is part of the region Mani. It has been reported that during the Slavic invasion in the 7th century AD a Slavic group called Meninghoi has moved and inhibited this area, possibly merged with the local Greek population. Many villages in Mani have Slavic and Greek names and Selitsa (Greek name: Verga) is one of them. The word selica in modern Slavic languages (such as Serbian) means 'migratory', which probably is connected with the fact that the Slavic group migrated there.
