Of local origin from the town of Selkirk. Thomas de Selghkirk rendered homage at Berwick, 1291 (RR.). Hugh de Selkyrk was a burgess of Edinburgh in 1368 and allowing years (RMS., I, 242), and in 1400 mention is made of a land there belonging to Peter de Selkirk (Egidii, p. 37). James Selkrig was town officer in Edinburgh in 1567 (MCM., II, p. 303), and another James Selkrig was a tobacco-cutter there in 1684 (BOEC., IX, p. 157). William Selkrig, maltman in Glasgow, 1580 (Burgesses). Jhone Selkreg was tenant in the barony of Glasgow in 1515 (Rental), and William Selkrigg was minister of Glenholm, 1679-90. John Silkrigg late in Cairns of Endrigg, 1731 (Kirkcudbright), Celcraig 1680, Salkirk 1789.
