This surname is derived from an occupation. 'the seller,' a saddler. Middle English selle, a seat. Old French 'selle, a stool, a seat, also a saddle': Cotgrave French and English Dictionary 'Sele, horsys harneys': Promptorium Parvulorum 'Stilt, horse harnesse': Palsgrave. The 'Sellers ("sadellers" written over), Verrours, and Fuystours' (v. Fewster) went together in the York Pageant (York Mystery Plays, ed. Toulmin Smith, p. xxvi).

Colin Sellar held a land in Aberdeen in 1281 (REA., II, p. 278). A family of this name were blacksmiths in the parish of Botriphnie for 400 years (Jervise, II, p. 12), John Sellar was admitted burgess of Aberdeen in 1407 (NSCM., I, p. 2), Thomas Sellar was declared innocent of part in detention of King James m in Edinburgh Castle in 1482 (Lennox, II, p. 123), and George Sellar, baxter, was burgess of Glasgow in 1577 (Burgesses). The surname was common in Glasgow in the sixteenth century (Protocols). Patrick Sellar was bailie of Linlithgow, 1590 (Sc. Ant., XI, p. 132). Seller 1549, Cellar 1646.
