SELVIELAND: From the 20 shilling land of old extent in the barony of Renfrew. The place name contains the old Gaelic personal name Sealbhach from which is derived the patronymic Mackelvie. Cristiane Seuelaund of C'.d'ou and Patrick de Selvenland of the county of Lanark rendered homage in 1296 (Bain, II, p. 204,213). Late in the thirteenth century the lands which formerly belonged to Patrick de Selvinsland in Renfrew were granted to Stephen, son of Nicholas (OPS,, I, p. 77), and in 1368 Hugh Seuiland, dominus terre Pomario (known later as 'The Orchard'), near Cadzow, bound himself to supply two candles of a pound each yearly to the church of Cadiou (REG., p. 282).
