This surname is derived from a nickname. 'the senior,' i.e. the older of two or more persons, generally of the same personal name. This mode of expression is as early as the 13th and 14th centuries, and is very commonly found in the Yorkshire Poll Tax, 1379. The cause is simple. Thomas Senzeor was resident in Balward (Bal-vaird) in 1513 (Cambus., 9), John Senzeour was burgess of Aberdeen, 1522 (CRA.,p. 100), and William Sinzour, witness in Edinburgh, 1541 (SCM., IV, p. 38).
