Serbest Surname Meaning
User-submitted Reference
Where used in Turkey or the region, the surname denotes someone descended from a 'Serb' - a Slavic person of Serbian ethnicity, likely forcibly taken from the Balkans by the Ottoman Empire blood tax system called 'Devshirme' in the period between 14th-19th centuries where boys ages 8-18 were taken from their families, forcibly converted to Islam and after a period of training, became the Janissary fighting troops. Many such men advanced to powerful positions in the Ottoman Empire, often becoming viziers, and having many children whose descendants today carry the surname they inherited or a nickname given to them to substitute for their surname where their surname was not known. In this case, Serbest is a corruption of Serbo-Croatian word 'Srbinda' or 'Srbenda' to mean the superlatively 'the Greatest Serb' or 'the most Serbian' likely denoting a Janissary who was prominently proud of being a Turk of Serbian heritage, or more likely, one who was suspect of disloyalty for harbouring 'Serb-like' sentiments ie disloyal.
