The earliest references to the Italian surname, Serra, date to the 12th century, showing Mari De Serra resided in Genoa in 1102. Guglielmo Serra was Bishop of Monteleone in 1418 and Giocomo Serra was made a Cardinal in 1492. Members of his family were admitted to the Knights Hospitaler of St. John of Jerusalem in 1543. Father Guiseppe Ottavio Serra was a priest and poet and died in 1769. The earliest "new world" reference I can locate is to Bernardo Serra arrived in New York on 11 October 1886 on the ship Alesia from Naples.
