SERVANUS: A British saint, whose work was mainly in the province of Fortriu or Stra-thearo. He is said to have founded a monastery at Culross in Fife, "where he lived in great veneration on account of his virtues and miracles." His period is uncertain (sixth or eighth century). His name may be compared with that of Seruan, son of Kedic (Watson I, p. 332). His conversation with the Devil is reported at length by Wyntoun (Original Chronicle, Scot. Text Soc. ed., bk. v). Gilleserf mac Rolf, a bondman (nativus), was one of the witnesses in 1231 to a perambulation between the lands of the Abbey of Dunfermline and those of David Durward (RD., p. 111).
