A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

A rare but old surname in Scotland. "The surname of Shand seems originally to have been confined to the north-eastern counties, particularly Aberdeenshire, and in that county more especially to the districts comprising the parishes o: Turriff, Forgue, Drumblade, Auchterless, Culsalmond, Fyvie, King-Edward, and Garnrie. In old times it was variously spelled Schawand, Schaand (1696), Schande, Schand (1528), and Shand... We have also Shandscross given to certain lands on the estate of Delgaty ' (Fermartyn, p. 198-99). Magister Robert Schawnd was prebendary of Arnaldston, 1522 (RAA., II, p. 436). Probably French. "Philibert de Shaunde was created earl of Bath in 1485; but nothing is known of him except that he was a native of Brittany" (Lower). Baring-Gould says from Chandai in Orne (p. 265).

Philibert de Shaunde was created Earl of Bath in 1485; but nothing is known of him except that he was a native of Brittany. Ext. Peerage. The name is common in the shires of Aberdeen and Banff. Inf. C. F. Shand, Esq.
