From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
Shank of that Ilk, an ancient family in Midlothian, derive their name from lands of that name there. Murdoch Shank, an immediate son of Shank of that Ilk, had charter of lands at Kinghorn, Fife, from Robert Bruce, 1319 (Nisbet, II, App., p. 219). Thomas Schankis witnessed a charter in the Castle of Cumnock, 1426 (RMS., II, 65), and in 1474 John de Schankis appears as charter witness in Glasgow (LCD., p. 189). Stene Schanx, witness in Lanark. 1488, appears two years later as Stene Synkis (Lanark, p. 5, 6), and in 1489 James Schankis had remission for his part in holding Dunbertane Castle against the king (APS., XII, p. 34; Lennox, II, p. 133). Ninian Schanlds was a provincial prior of the Dominicans in Scotland, 1490 (RMS., II, 2056), and in 1503 there is record of payments to Rowe Shankis or Schankis (Lanark, p. 13,14). Thomas Schankis was witness in 1508 (Panmure, II, 275), John Schankis was indweller in Lethe (Leith), 1595 (MCM., II, p. 219), and in 1599 a payment was made to William Schankis in Futtie (CRA., p. 202). Alexander Shank was burgess of Wigtown, 1712 (Wigtown), and Admiral John Schank died in 1823.
