SHANWELL: From the lands of Shanwell near Milnathort, Kinross-shire. John Schanwall (Chan well or Schanwelle) was abbot of Cupar-Angus from 1480 to 1509, and Duncane Schanwel obtained from the abbot of the same house a ferm of the lands of Schanwel in 1496 (Cupar-Angus, I, p. 88,250). Magister Robert Shanvull who witnessed a precept of sasine in 1494 (Panmure, II, p. 259) is probably the Mr. Robert Shanwull who obtained a grant of the chaplainry of the church of Kersegrange in 1496 and appears again in 1507 as "Mr. Robert-Schamvell vicar of Kyrcawdy" (Cupar-Angus, I, p. 250,262). ffrater Thomas Schauvel appears as "supein of Cupar-Angus in 1500 (REB., I, p. 220).
