The Anglo-Saxon scirmann is defined by Bosworth as "a man who superintends, shireman, provincial, an overseer, governor, provost, bailiff of a hundred." The parish of Shermanbury, in Sussex, must have taken its name, in Saxon times, from one who bore either the name or the office, or both.
