Shellberg Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

(Swedish) One who came from a Kjellberg ('source mountain'). It comes from the old Swedish kelda, kjel(l)(da) (modern Swedish källa), and berg, meaning 'mountain'.

It is also important to mention that Kjell is a common name in Sweden (via Norse kętill, meaning 'kettle', 'caldron'). But it is very unlikely that this is the origin to the last name, as there is no other example of this that I can think of that has a name, then a geographical locality. Swedish location surnames are almost never from real place names (e.g., Johnston, 'John's town'), they are usually ornamental.
