This surname is derived from the parish of Chelmorton, Derbyshire. Its bearers gained the surname on account of living there and were minor land-owners. As the concentration of the family moved to Lancashire by the 16th century, the rendering of the name switched almost wholly from a leading 'C' to a leading 'S.' The evolution of the name can be seen in the renderings of the name in the parish registers of Gorton, Lancashire: Shellmardin, Shellmerdine, Shelmardyne, Shelmerdeen, Shelmerden, Shelmerdin, Shelmerdon, Shelmerdyne and Shelmordyne. In Lancashire the family enjoyed a gentry status, held positions in the Church of England and were noteworthy in the political and commercial affairs of Manchester. Numerous localities in the county bear their name.

According to the English Place Name Society, Chelmorton is derived from the Old English personal name, 'Ceolmaer' and 'dūn,' a hill.
