From the occupation of 'shepherd,' Latinized pastor in early charters. William and Walter Pastor were on inquest held at Peebles, 1262 (Peebles, 5). Henricus Scyphard held land in Elgin in 1363 (REM., p. 312), and Thomas Schiphird or Scippart witnessed inventory of the estate of Sir John Erskine of Dun, 1513 (SCM., IV, p. 16, 18). In 1538 the wife of Wille Schiphird was fined for brewing (CRA., p. 157). James and William Schiphird were tenants of Innerlochthe in 1565 (REM., p. 441), and Thomas Schipperd is recorded in Litill Innerlochte, 1594 (SCM., II, p. 122). John Schiphird was 'post' in Aberdeen in 1650 (ibid., V, p. 173), and Andrew Schippert, baxter burgess of Dundee who died in 1641 is buried in the Howff there. Gulielmus Schippert in Kynnaldie, 1643 (Inquis. Tut., 657), and Jon Shepherd in Midskeith, 1662 (Banff Rec., p, 21).
The occupation. As a surname it is often variously mis-spelt, as Shepard. Shephard, Shepheard, Sheppard, Shepperd. The H.R. forms of this name are Pastor and Le Pastur.
Shepherd,Sheppard. —This name is distributed over the greater part of England; but is absent or infrequent in the eastern counties south of the Humber. Its chief centres in the north are in Westmoreland, Lancashire, and the North and East Ridings; in the midlands, in the counties of Warwick, Northampton, and Notts; and in the south - west of England in the contiguous counties of Somerset and Gloucester. It is remarkable that its deficiency in the eastern counties is to some extent supplied by the Sheppersons of Cambridgeshire. Shepherd also is established in Scotland, but has no definite distribution, and is by no means numerous.
