From ME. scherare, one who dresses the pile of cloth, a shearer, in Latin charters rendered cissor or scissore. John Cissor was burgess of Dunfermline, 1316 (RD., 349), and William Scherar, bailie of Berwick, 1324 (Cambus,, 39). Fremanislande in the barony of Kylbouho was leased to Ade Cissor, 1376 (RHM., I, p. 1.). Johannes Scherar was bailie and burgess of Aberdeen, 1399 (SCM., V, p. 13, 14), John Scherar was chaplain of the altar of S. Ninian in Edinburgh, 1405 (Egidii, p. 43), and Paul Scissore, burgess of Glasgow, 1417 (LCD., p. 239). Eustace Schechare or Schethare appears in 1425 as a burghal proprietor (RMS , II, 35; Soltre, p. 294). William Scherer was proprietor of a tenement in Dundee, 1427 (RMS., II, 95), and another William Sherar was burgess of Aberdeen, 1451 (REA., II, p. 297). Andro Scherare was parishioner of Kinkell, 1473 (Inverurie, p. 122), and Johannes Scherare was archdeacon of Ross, 1503 (REG., p. 506; Trials, I, p. 42). A family of the name appeared in Strathblane early in seventeenth century. John Scharrar was "wachman in ye castell of Stirling," 1587 (Sc. Ant., VI p. 162), and William Cherire was resident in Stirling, 1717 (ibid., p. 88).
