In the Rolls of the Freemen of the City of Chester (1392-1700) ‘sherman’ occurs frequently as a trade-name, e.g.—Nicholas Wilkynson, sherman, alias Nicholas Shermon, A.D. 1476-7.
“One who shears the Nap of Cloth” in Old English. Different from Shearer (q.v.).
(English) The shearman or cutter of wool or cloth.
(from an ancestor's occupation) A dealer in woolen cloth. Since the cloth had to be cut with shears (Scher or Sher), this is how the name developed.
At Norwich, one who shears worsted, fustians, &c., an employment once known as ' sherman-craft.' English Surn. i. 108. The word has another distinct meaning. "Even at this day, in Norfolk, a person born out of the county is called a Shireman, i. e., born in some one of the shires or counties of England." Archaeologia, xix, 16. But a more dignified origin may be assigned: in Domesday-book the Judge of the County-court (a very important office in Norman times) was called a Scirman, i.e., Shireman. The Anglo-Saxon scirmann is defined by Bosworth as "a man who superintends, shireman, provincial, an overseer, governor, provost, bailiff of a hundred." The parish of Shermanbury, in Sussex, must have taken its name, in Saxon times, from one who bore either the name or the office, or both.
A shearman, one who used to shear cloth.
"Villain, thy father was a plasterer, and thou thyself a shearman."
Stafford to Jack Cade. Shaks. Henry VI.
Gaufridus Sire-horne, Normandy 1180-95 (Magni Rotuli Scaccarii Normanniae); John and William Sireman, Engl. c. 1272 (Rotuli Hundredorum). Hence the distinguished American General. See Sharman.
(English), Shearman or Clothworker.
Sherman is another old North Devon name, now somewhat rare. John and Richard Sherman were Bideford aldermen in the reign of Charles I. (Wat.). Gabriel Sherman held lands in Barnstaple in the reign of Charles II. (G.) A family of the name lived at Neiston, in Ottery St. Mary, in the 17th century (Pr.).
