Sheveling Surname User-submission:
In my genealogical research I have found and verified multiple spellings of Shevlin, all in the same lineage. Some were as a consequence of census enumerators recording a phonetic spelling when the informant was illiterate; sometimes due to faulty transcriptions from the original handwritten entry (particularly from old style Scotch handwriting); also from transcribers mistaking certain vowels and even some consonants that cannot be accurately defined from the original.

Sheveling Surname Meaning
User-submitted Reference
In my genealogical research I have found and verified multiple spellings of Shevlin, all in the same lineage. Some were as a consequence of census enumerators recording a phonetic spelling when the informant was illiterate; sometimes due to faulty transcriptions from the original handwritten entry (particularly from old style Scotch handwriting); also from transcribers mistaking certain vowels and even some consonants that cannot be accurately defined from the original.
Therefore through matching the various names, place and date of birth (or recorded age)and use of wildcard, soundex and other techniques I have been able to find members of the same family lineage with the following variations of Shevlin: Shevlin, Shivlin, Shiblin, Shivlen, Shevelin, Shovlin, Shovelin, ShovelingSkevillin, Schuvland, Sharlin and Shevlan.
Some of these were obvious transcription errors.
The spelling Shovlin or Shovelin was found predominantly in Ireland and parts of Scotland, the UK and parts of the United States (particularly Eastern Pennsylvania) where Irish immigrants from County Donegal and Monaghan settled in the 19th century.
"Shevlin" is the phonetic, Anglicized version which appears in English records such as Griffith's Valuations (circa 1857) and Tithe Applotment Books, Flax Growers lists, etc. Shevlin is the form now generally found throughout Ireland (other than Donegal)and other nations, although the name spelled with an "o" usually denotes a family with origins in Donegal or Monaghan.
The name in Irish is said to derive from O'Seibhleain, O'Sibhlin or O'Syvlane in old texts.
Because my paternal line is from County Donegal my interest is primarily in the form "Shovlin" and it's common variant "Shovelin"from that part of Ireland. (The Shovelin version seems to be diminisishing and I have found instances where school teachers and other authority figures urged the beare to shange Shovelin to Shovlin or Shevlin for the sake of consistency.) for that reason I presume it would be better that I change my registration from Shevlin to Shovlin.
