Shewan Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

A surname recorded mainly in the shires of Aberdeen and Kincardine. Mathew Sewane was admitted burgess of Aberdeen, 1444 (NSCM., I, p. 9). William Sewan held land in Forfar in 1509 (RAA., II, 486). John Schewine, tenant of half of part of Glenboy, c. 1520 (Cupar-Angus, I, p. 300), and Thomas Sewan, reidare at Farnwell, 1574 (RMR.). John Schewane was burgess of Dundee and David Schewane burgess of Brechin, 1589 (REB., II, 227). James Schewan appears as cancellarius of Brechin in 1605, and in 1608 as bailie of Dundee (ibid., II, 236,238). Patrick or Peter Schewane was admitted burgess of Aberdeen, 1603 (NSCM., I, p. 97), and Robert Shuan is in record in Edzell, 1714. Shuan is the name of the first mate of the brig Covenant in Stevenson's Kidnapped. Shewan occurs as a 'Ness' name in Shetland, and by some is mistakenly supposed to be from ON. Swein. In Shetland sasines appears the name of Adam Schewan, 1623.

(Scandinavian) Sea-Used [this name corresponds exactly to the Swedish sjöwan (sj as sh) (Dano-Norwegian sövant), fromO.N. sjó-r, sǽ-r, sea + uan-r, used, wont] This is much more probable, for several reasons, than the suggested derivation from an O.Norse Siguan [Old Norse sig-r, victory + uán, hope], which, in any case, would be a fem. name.
