(Anglo-Latin) Roofer, Tiler, i.e. with shingles or wood-laths [from Middle English shingle for shindle; Latin scindula, a shingle]
A mechanic who covered roofs with oaken tiles. Many church spires are so covered at this day; and formerly roofs, both of churches and houses, were shingled, as they are in North America at the present time. The occupation subsisted in Sussex, as a distinct trade, in the XVII. century. The name may, however, have a different origin, for shingling is an important process in the manufacture of iron.
