Shinkwin Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This is a variant of Jenkin, gaelicized as Sinchín, found in Co. Cork. SIF 137
Both these names belong to Co. Cork but in spite of a superficial resemblance they are quite distinct.
Shinkwin derives from the English Jenkin which was gaelicized as Sinchín or Seinchín and this in turn was re-anglicized Shinkwin. Nevertheless it should be mentioned that the Four Masters, under date 1013, mention an anchorite called Ó Seinchinn with, however, no indication of his homeland; but if this ever became a hereditary surname it must have died out, unless it is an early form of Ó Scingin, the name of an erenagh and literary family of Ardcarne, Co. Roscommon: it is of the Uí Fiachra and has no connexion with Co. Cork-to-day it survives in Co. Cavan as Skinnion, which according to Matheson has there been changed to Delahide. Shinnick, on the other hand, is the name of a small sept of Corca Laoidhe, and Co. Cork is the only part of Ireland in which there is any considerable number of them to-day. Shinnick, too, is misleading for, with Shinnock and Shinagh and other similar variants it has been widely used as a synonym of Fox in Connacht.
