SHIPLAW: About the middle of the thirteenth century, Gilcrist de Schopelaus witnessed the agreement between the abbot and monks of Neubotle and Alexander de Drochyl and Alicia, his wife, as to the marches between the lands of Kynggesside and the Abbey lands of Spurland (Neubotle, p. 26-27). In 1259 the same Gilcrist of Sipelawes affixed his seal to the inquisition made on the lands of Padevinan (APS., I, p. 98). The surname is derived from the lands of Schopelaus, now Shiplaw, in the parish of Eddleston, Peeblesshire.
