Bardsley, Harrison, and Ewen say this is a nickname from 'short hose' (stockings). John Schurthouse was tenant in Coteland in the barony of Abirdoure, Fife, in 1376 (RHM., I, p. lxiv). Thomas Schorthouss, chaplain, was witness in Inverarite, 1505 (REB., I, 222), Valter Schorthouss was witness in Dunfermline, 1532 (RD., p. 353), and William Schortes is recorded in Lethems, 1561 (Dunfermline). John Shorttus in Steilend had sasine in his favor, 1572 (Pilfirrane, 172). John Shortous is recorded in Kingorne, 1636 (PBK., p. 92), Robert Shortus in Dunfermline was accused of consulting witches, 1643 (Chalmers, Dunfermline, I, p. 436), and the name also appears in Edinburgh in 1655 as Schorthous (Edinb. Marr.). Schurtus 1449, Shortus 1565.
