Shropshire Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This surname is derived from Shropshire, an inland county bordering Wales. Holders of the surname will be descendants of someone who lived in the county. The original (pre-Norman) name for the country was Scrobbesbyrigscir, named for its seat, Scrobbesbyri, now Shrewsbury. After the Norman invasion it became Salopshire, and later Shropshire. The etymology is thought to be from the personal name, 'Scrob,', the Anglo-Saxon 'burh,' meaning fortified place and 'scir,' meaning district. Thus, as a surname, it means: 'Descendant of one who hailed from the district of Scrob's fort.' It appears county surnames, such as Shropshire and Devonshire, are assumed when someone left the county. However, there were a considerable number of Shropshires in Shropshire in 1881. They are found exclusively in the north-east of the county, with the majority of holders being in neighboring north-west Staffordshire. So the family likely moved to Staffordshire and back to Shropshire. Records from the last few hundred years have people using Shropshire as an alias, e.g. 'Thomas Holdran alias Shropshire' in Lancashire Qaurter Sessions, 1686.
