Shufflebotham Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Shippalbothom,' evidently some small spot in the ancient parish of Bury, Lancashire, or the near neighbourhood. Like Higginbottom, Sidebotham, and several other local surnames with the suffix -bottom (v. Botham), Shufflebotham has East Cheshire or South-east Lancashire for its native home. The several stages of corruption after Shippobotham are Shifabottom and the imitative Shufflebotham. In the light of the subjoined entries, the assertion that the origin is Shaw-field-bottom (Lower) falls to the ground.

1582. Married — John Shippobotham and Anne Wilkynson: Reg. Prestbury (East Ches).

1587. Baptised — Edwarde Shippobothom: ibid.

1626. Married — Charles Shifabothom and Jone Horderne: ibid.

Evidently the place is referred to in the following list of 'messuages, lands and rents' in 'Walton, Lancaster, Wigan, Haughton, Skelmersdale, ... Bury, Cheetham, Cheetwood, Tottington, Undesworth, Salford, Shuttleworth, Shippalbothan, Middleton,' &c.: (1485) Baines' Lancashire. i. 516.—Since writing the above I find the following references to this family, conclusively proving my points:

James Shepobotham, of Heap, Bury, 1579: Wills at Chester.

Francis Shippowbotham, Tottington, 1602: ibid.

George Shupplebotham, of the parish of Bury, 1621: ibid. (1621-50).

James Shipplebotham, of Heap, Bury, 1642: ibid.

Richard Shufflebotham, of Betchton, 1674: ibid. (1651-80).

The place itself also acquired the same form:

Roger Kay, of Shufflebotham, 1614: Wills at Chester.Stolen from Fore-bears

(English) belonging to Shufflebottom or Shipplebottom (Lancs), a.d. 1323 Shipwallebothum, a.d. 1285 Schipwallebothon, Schyppewallebothem, and Schyppewellebothem = the Sheep-Well Valley [Old English scíp, sheep + welle, a well, spring + botm, a bottom, valley]

My former explanation by "Shaw-field bottom" is hardly tenable.
