This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Shippalbothom,' evidently some small spot in the ancient parish of Bury, Lancashire, or the near neighbourhood. Like Higginbottom, Sidebotham, and several other local surnames with the suffix -bottom (v. Botham), Shufflebotham has East Cheshire or South-east Lancashire for its native home. The several stages of corruption after Shippobotham are Shifabottom and the imitative Shufflebotham. In the light of the subjoined entries, the assertion that the origin is Shaw-field-bottom (Lower) falls to the ground.

1587. Baptised — Edwarde Shippobothom: ibid.

1626. Married — Charles Shifabothom and Jone Horderne: ibid.
