Shukla, in Sanskrit, means 'white'. Shuklapaksh (शुक्लपक्ष) means 'bright moonlight during the waxing phase'. The Shukla Brahmin were considered to be the fairest in complexion and the highest among the Brahmin of the north, hence the name Shukla (white) was attributed to them.
Due to the elite treatment given to them, they have always been treated as a patriarchal group of elite Brahmin. As a result Shukla Brahmin have only the Bharadwaj gotra, while other Brahmin can have multiple gotra that change with the surname.
