From (1) the Old English personal name Saebeald, 'sea-bold,' or (2) from Sieebeald, 'victoriously bold.' About 1200 Philip ae Maleuille married Eva, daughter of Walter, son of Sibald (RAA., I, p. 64). Between 120314 Walter filius Sibaldi witnessed charters granted by Thomas de Lundin and John de Mountfort (ibid., p. 44, 47), and c. 1222 he witnessed a charter by Randulf de Strathphetham to Brechin (REB., II, 3). David Sibald who witnessed c. 1250 two charters by Duncan, earl of Carrick (CMN., 13, 14), witnessed another about the same period by Nicholas, son of Duncan, as David Sibaud (ibid., 15). Donatus Sabbaued witnessed a charter by Earl Roger de Quincy, 1246 (Nisbet, I, p. 125), and Duncanus Sibbaued perhaps the same person as Donatus Sybaldi filii Walteri had a charter of the mill of Lundin (Sibbald, Fife, 1803, p. 369). Sir Duncan Sybald in 1286 granted one stone of wax and four shillings for light to monks of Cupar-Angus (Cupar-Angus, I, p. 344). Thomas Si-balde was juror on inquest on lands of Disarde (Dysart) in 1296, and David Sibbald of Augansouthe of the county of Lanark rendered homage in same year (Bain, II, 212,216). John Seball of Scotland had a safe conduct into England, 1377 (ibid., IV, 254). Thomas Sebalde or Sybald witnessed charters of the lands of Myrecairnie in Fife in 1386 and c. 1390 (Wemyss, II, 19, 27), and as Thomas Sibald was one of those who attested to the marches of Kyrknes and Louchor, 1395 (RPSA., p. 5). The seal of William Sibbald or Sibbett of Cambuskenneth, 1581, is mentioned by Macdonald (2466). Sebald 1440, Sibauld 1446, Sibbal 1619, Sibbauld 1542.
