The celebrated Sir Henry, and Sir Philip Sydney, and Algernon Sydney were of the family of Sidney, originally Sithney, of Sussex. This family is stated to have come from Aquitaine t. Henry II. The original seat was probably what is now called Sathonay, near Lyons. The older form occurs in Normandy 1180 (Magni Rotuli Scaccarii Normanniae), when Robert de Setingneio is mentioned.
