Siegel Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
(German) Descendant of little Sigo, a pet form of names beginning with Sieg (victory), as Sigivald, Sigiwart and Sigiwolf; variants of Segal, q.v.
(from an ancestor's occupation) Siegel is the German for “seal.” An engraver of seals would be called Siegel or Siegler. Jews were very prominent in the occupation of seal engraving in the eighteenth century. Other variations are Ziegler, Ziegelman, Ziegel, Siegelman. This name should not be confused with Segal which is an acronym for a Levite, although Segal and Siegel are often pronounced alike in English.
User-submitted Reference
Siegel is German for "stamp" or "seal". German names have three major types: occupations for gentiles, place names for nobility and objects for Jews. Given that, in many small towns, the only literate people were often Jewish, they were often also keepers of the town seal and so, when they were allowed to take last names, they took on the name "Siegel".
