A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

The name is on record in Ireland since the thirteenth century but is not of Gaelic origin, being derived from the Anglo-Saxon personal name Sigen. The family is commemorated in five place names in Co.

Wexford (Sigginstown etc.) and also in the better known Jigginstown in Co. Kildare, all still extant as well as others such as Siggensmede now obsolete. It is clear from the earlier references that it was at first somewhat scattered, several of these being to Munster (including William Sygyne, who was mayor of Cork in 1402), but there was a Siggins (then Sygyn) who held land in Co. Wexford as early as 1250 and it is with that county they have been mainly associated. Sigen of Sigenstown was counted among the chief gentry of Co. Wexford by Sir Arthur Chicester in 1608; fifty years later Edward Siggins, of Sigginstown, Co. Wexford, was among those transplanted under the Cromwellian regime. We know from the Civil Survey that he was an “Irish Papist” and held some land in the parish of Clonmines.

Their adhesion to the old faith and consequent transplantation to Connacht led to their extinction as members of the landed aristocracy; and the name has since become rare. Some families of Siggins, however, are still to be found in Connacht and also in Co. Kildare.
