Sykes is a very characteristic West Riding name. Though it also occurs in Lincolnshire, it is there much less frequent. The Yorkshire representatives of the name are very numerous in the Huddersfield district. Its ancient home was in Cumberland and Yorkshire, and probably there were different parent stocks. One of the early Yorkshire families possessed land at Flockton in the reign of Henry II.; and from the Flockton stock the Sykes family of Driglington branched off in the time of Edward VI. (James' "Bradford"). The wealthy Leeds merchants of this Dame in the 17th century, who were lords of the manor of Leeds, and who filled the offices of mayor and alderman of the town, belonged to a family that in the beginning of the 16th century hailed from the Sykes family of Sykes - dyke near Carlisle (Th.). Sykehouse is the name of a West Riding township and village. Sykes is still a common Leeds name.
