User-submitted Reference
Silberstein: 'Silverstone.' Ornamental. German origins. Mostly borne by Ashkenazi Jews. From 'silber' (noun, German, 'silver') and 'stein' (noun, German, 'stone'). When Eastern European received surnames in the late 18th century, well-off Jews purchased 'better' names - 'Silber,' meaning a valuable metal, would have been a fairly prestigious name and more likely indicates a well-off ancestor than it does someone involved in the silver trade. Famous bearers include Ascher Silberstein (1852-1909), an American businessman and philosopher.
