From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Cecil,' nick. Sill (less commonly Cill), with terminative -cock (v. Introduction). It would appear that to preserve a distinction between the popular fem. Cecilia and masc. Cecil, the nick, of the former was Siss (v. Sisson and Sissot), and of the latter, Sil or Sill; v. Silson.

Johannes Cyllson, 1379: Poll Tax of Yorkshire.

I have not yet found a single Silas in mediaeval records. Mr. Lower's suggested origination from this Apostolic name, which I carelessly accepted in my English Surnames, is out of the question. The name was unknown. Of course Silcocks or Silcox is the genitive form; compare William and Williams, or Wilcock and Wilcocks, or Wilcox.

Silcokkus de Altrichelun, Close Rolls, 11 Edward I.

Adam Silkok, 1379: Poll Tax of Yorkshire.

Johannes Silcok, 1379: ibid.

Matilda Sylkok, 1379: ibid.

William Selecok, Somerset, 1 Edward III: Kirby's Quest.

John Selcok, Somerset, 1 Edward III: ibid.

In some cases very likely absorbed by Simcock or Simcox, which see.
