'About the year 1200, Sylvestro Gozzolini, of Osimo, founded an order of monks, who, probably, are the cause that Sylvester became known in Ireland as a Christian name, and has come to us as a surname" (Yonge, new ed., p. 179). Siluester, a monk of St. Andrews, a. 1199 (RPSA., p. 290), and Silvester, a monk of Hadingtona, c. 1250 (RPSA., p. 389). John Silvestre, parson of Dolfinstone, Lanarkshire, rendered homage in 1296 (Bain, II, p. 212). As a forename we have it in Siluester of Ratra, 1473 (Cupar-Angus, I, p. 172), and Silwester M'Randell in Gargavache, 1600 (SCM., IV, p. 293).
