A summaster, i.e. chamberlain or clerk of expenses; (a) a summister, one who summarizes, abridges writings, Sec. This is most probable, as the word occurs twice at least: 'Over this, if the historian be long, he is accompted a trifler; if he be short, he is taken for a summister' (Holinshed, Chron. Ireland). 'And thus, though rudely, have I plaied the summister' (The Meane in Spending, 1598): both quoted by Halliwell. The name occurs in Mun. Acad. Oxon. (1462) as head of 'Sykyll Halle' (v. English Surnames, 5th edit.). Simister is a well-known North-English surname.
