Dictionary of American Family Names (1956) by Elsdon Coles Smith

This name is generally understood to be a derivative of Simon; but it may have come from the Domesday name Simund, which is distinct from Simon. A family of Simmons who have been resident for three centuries and a half at Seaford, co. Sussex, have evidently corrupted their appellative from Seaman; and it has gone through the following phases since the year 1553:-Seman, Seaman, Seamans, Semons, Simons, Simonds, Simmonds, Symonds, Symmonds, and Simmons. The name Seman is of very frequent occurrence in the records of the Cinque Ports, and other places on the Kent and Sussex coast, in the XIII., XIV., and subsequent centuries. It has doubtless had many distinct origins from many an "ancient mariner" of that region. In the year 1294, the ship "De la Bochere," of Winchelsea, was commanded by Benedict Seman, who doubtless obtained his name from his occupation. See Cooper's Winchelsea, p. 55.

The Norman People (1874)

Simmonds,Simmons,Simonds,Simons,Symonds, Symons.-This name in its various forms has evidently two origins. Generally, it would seem to be derived from Simon, a name of Norman introduction and represented by Simund in Domesday; but there is much to support the opinion of Mr. Lower that it is in not a few cases a corruption of Seaman which, as Seman, is very common in the records of the Cinque Ports, and other places on the coasts of Kent and Sussex. The instance is adduced by him of a Sussex family of Simmons resident at Seaford for three - and - a - half centuries, in which we can trace all the changes of the name from Seaman and Seman, its earliest forms in the sixteenth century, to Simmons, as it is now spelt: they are as follows:-Seaman, Seman, Seamans, Semons, Simons, Simonds, Symonds, Simmonds, Symmonds, Simmons. It is also remarkable that at the present day Seaman is a name mostly restricted to Norfolk and Suffolk, in which two counties Symonds is also well represented.

The several varieties of the name arrange themselves readily into two groups, Simmonds and Simmons being most numerous in Cornwall and Sussex, and afterwards in Bucks, Oxfordshire, Berks, and some of the adjacent counties; whilst Simons, Symons, Symonds, etc., have their great home in Cornwall, but are also fairly numerous in Devon, Dorset, Cambridgeshire, Suffolk, and in some of the neighbouring counties. The localities of the various forms of the two groups are noticed in the alphabetical list.Stolen from Fore bears

When we come to consider the combined distribution of all the forms, we find that this name is essentially characteristic of the southern half of England and especially of the coast counties. It has three centres, the principal being in the south - west in Cornwall, the second being in Sussex, the third in Suffolk and Cambridgeshire, from which centres it has spread to the counties adjacent.
