Woulfe states that Ó Sionáin is a variant of Ó Seanáin (from sean old): I would like to see evidence of this equation before accepting it. The only Irish manuscript in which I have seen the name is that relating to the foundations of the Irish Franciscan province (see Analecta Hibernica VI 202) where Nioclás Sionán is mentioned as Provincial in 1629. It occurs several times in the Fiants between 1573 and 1603 as Shynan and Shynane, all in Co. Cork and mostly Doneraile. In none of these cases is the prefix O used with the name.
