SITHECH, Sithach: an old Gaelic personal name first recorded in the genitive in one of the twelfth century Gaelic entries in the Book of Deer as mac Sithig. It is the Middle Irish sidheach 'wolf.' Sithach, a Culdee of Mothel (now Muthill) was witness to a charter by the bishop of Dunblane, c. 1178 (Carta de Northberwic, no. 5). Seth mac Lood, a "native man" of the Abbey of Dunfermline, is one of the witnesses in a deed of perambulation of 1230 (RD., no. 196). Sythach Macmallon, a bondman (nativus) in Badenoch, is mentioned in an agreement between the bishop of Moray and Walter Comyn, earl of Menteth, of date between 1224-33 (REM., no. 76). In another agreement between the same persons regarding the lands of Kynkardyn dated 1234 one of the witnesses is Fereardus filius Sethi (ibid., no. 85). A charter by Alexander de Yla, earl of Ross, dated 1338, of the lands of Dalnafert and Kinrorayth (Kinrora) expressly reserved an acre of ground near le Sty chan" of Dalnafert "in qua situm fuit manerium quondam Scayth filii Ferchardii" (SCM., IV, p. 125). Between the years 1455 and 1469 there are numerous references to three individuals designated the king's "couriers" and "messengers" (ER., VI-VIII). All three bear the same surname which is variously spelled Scheo, Scheho, Schetho, Schethou, Schethow, Scheoch, Schethoc, Scheok, and once, wrongly, de Schetho, as if the name were a territorial one. Sythock Hair was concerned in the slaughter of Donald McEwin in the Cors of Balmaclellane, 1529 (RSS., II-128). See also under Shaw (2) .
