SITLINGTON: John de Schutlyntone of Edinburghshire rendered homage in 1296 (Bain, II, p. 207). John Sitlington of Stanehouse in Galloway was outlawed as rebel in 1528 (Trials, I, p. 140), and William Schitlingtoun was witness in Dumfries in 1541 (Anderson). Agnes Shitlington was in Auchinbreck, 1642 (Dumfries), James Sitlington of Dunscore died in New Jersey, 1685. John Shitlintone, merchant in Dumfries, 1689 (RPC., 3. ser. XIV, p. 690), and John Sittlingtown alias Seton in Stroan of Dalry, 1738 (Kirkcudbright). The outlawry of 1528 probably was the cause of the extermination of the old family of the name, at least in Galloway.
