From the occupation of "skinner" or flayer of hides (ME. skynnere) in Latin documents the name is rendered pelliparius. William pelliparius witnessed a charter by William de Lundin in favor of the canons of St. Andrews, c. 1250 (RPSA., p. 264). The land of Simon Pellipar in Aberdeen is mentioned in 1281 (REA., II, p. 278), and in 1345 mention is made of the heiress of William Pellipar, umquhill burgess of Roxburgh (Kelso, 379-380). Stephan Skynnar held land in Inverness in 1361 (REM., p. 305), John Skinner was burgess of the same town, c. 1360 (Grant, III, p. 12), and another John Skinner was admitted burgess of Aberdeen in 1470, and Henry Pelliparius in the year following (NSCM., I, p. 22). Bartholomew Skinner was a witness in Glasgow in 1487 (LCD., 256), and a complaint was recorded by Elizabeth Skinner in Dysart in 1696 (Dysart, p. 55). Skynar 1556.
