A Guide to Irish Names (1964) by Edward MacLysaght

This name has now become very rare, but it was formerly of considerable importance. Originally the family were erenaghs of Ardcarne in Co. Roscommon, and a branch migrated to Tirconnell where they were ollavs and historians to the O'Donnells before the better known O'Clearys acquired that position. There are a number of references to both these branches in the Four Masters and other annals up to 1402. The late sixteenth century Fiants find them as O'Skynin etc. still at Ardcarne. Coming to the last century birth registrations locate them in Co. Leitrim and also Co. Cavan, where they were also established under the alias of Delahide: this is an example-not of extraordinary anglicization, for Skinnion is an anglicization of Ó Sgingín-but of the absurd synonyms sometimes adopted, in 138this case presumably from the connexion of skin and hide! Another variant which a century ago was more numerous than Skinnion was Skinnan or Skinnon.
